Rhode Island Foundation awards more than $4 million in scholarships
Many of the recipients and their families gathered at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet with the Foundation and its donors to celebrate their achievements.
Hundreds of students from across the state are headed off to college with the help of more than $4 million in scholarships from the Rhode Island Foundation.
“These scholarships reward all that these students achieved and honor the donors who make their dreams of a better future come true,” said Cicilline. “The impact of their philanthropy will be felt for years to come as these young people join the workforce and contribute to civic life of their communities.”
Dozens of individual and organizational donors have established scholarship funds at the Foundation to help students defray educational expenses such as tuition, fees and books. The Carter Roger Williams Scholarships are among the largest, worth up to $80,000 over four years. Audrey Adams is one of five recipients this year.
“I’ve been dreaming about college for as long as I can remember. I look eagerly toward its array of opportunities, from engaging in countless classes at the intersections of my interests to exploring culture and language through studying abroad. I will be able to view the world around me through entirely new angles, each day sparking my intellectual curiosity anew,” said Adams, a 2025 graduate of Barrington High School who plans to attend the University of Michigan and study sociology with a minor in creative writing.
In addition to general assistance, the Foundation also offers scholarships targeting certain academic majors, residents of particular cities and towns and other special circumstances. For example, the Rhode Island PBS and The Public’s Radio Scholarship Fund targets students pursuing journalism or communications as a career. Timothy Yean is one of the current recipients.
“There’s nothing to describe the feeling of learning that I won this scholarship. My parents were happy for me, but I think I was even happier because I knew right then and there that I wouldn’t have to worry too much about paying for college any longer,” said Yean, a 2024 graduate of Cranston High School East who is majoring in communications at Rhode Island College.
Other sources of assistance include the Major Jeremiah P. Murphy Scholarship Fund, the Hope High Endowed Scholarship Fund, the Edward J. and Virginia M. Routhier Nursing Scholarship Fund and the Robert G. and Joyce Andrew College Scholarship Fund.
In addition to help with college costs, the Foundation also offers aid to Rhode Islanders who attend trade or technical schools in preparation for employment through funds like the David L. Taton Family Vocational/Technical Scholarship Fund.
The Foundation expects to begin taking applications for the 2026-27 academic year after Jan. 1. For more information about applying, click HERE.
