2026 Murray Family Prize honors Shannon Carroll of Genesis Center for community leadership
The $50,000 prize recognizes her leadership in expanding educational and economic opportunities for Rhode Islanders.
The 2026 Murray Family Prize for Community Enrichment at the Rhode Island Foundation has been awarded to Shannon Carroll, president and CEO of Genesis Center.
“Shannon’s focus on ensuring that people receive the training and services they need in order to lead fulfilling lives sets a remarkable standard for others to emulate. We take enormous pleasure in recognizing her for her determination and dedication,” said Paula McNamara, daughter of Terrence and Suzanne Murray, who along with her parents, brother and sister established the Murray Family Prize for Community Enrichment at the Foundation.
Since becoming President and CEO in 2014, Carroll has led Genesis Center's efforts to expand access to education, workforce training and supportive services that help Rhode Islanders achieve greater economic independence.
Today, Genesis Center serves approximately 1,200 individuals annually through English language classes, job training programs, citizenship preparation and supportive services. The nonprofit also serves more than 100 children each year through its Early Learning Center.
“I’ve always believed that where someone starts in life shouldn’t determine where they can go. That belief is really at the heart of what we do at Genesis Center. Whether it’s helping adults learn English, train for good jobs or to become U.S. citizens, or giving their children a strong start in our Early Learning Center, it’s all about creating opportunities for families to move forward,” said Carroll. “I’m so proud of our staff, volunteers and board members who make this work possible every day, and I’m incredibly grateful to the Murray family for this honor.”
Through initiatives like its Bridges to Career Opportunities workforce development program and its training restaurant, CHOP (Culinary Hub of Providence), Genesis Center prepares students for in-demand careers in healthcare and the culinary industry, providing hands-on training, industry-recognized credentials and pathways to employment.
“There are many Rhode Islanders like Shannon, who are working faithfully and quietly to improve the lives of those around them. We are grateful to the Murray family for allowing us to shine a light on their inspiring stories,” said David N. Cicilline, president and CEO of the Rhode Island Foundation.
The Murray Family Prize was launched in 2017. Recent recipients include George Ortiz of The Elisha Project, Lisa Guillette of Foster Forward, Joe Garlick of NeighborWorks Blackstone River Valley, Eileen Hayes of Amos House, Mario Bueno of Progreso Latino and Kate Brewster of the Jonnycake Center for Hope in South Kingstown.
The Rhode Island Foundation is the largest and most comprehensive funder of nonprofit organizations in Rhode Island. Through civic leadership, fundraising and grant-making activities, together with neighbors and partners, the Foundation is helping to create progress that lasts.
