The 1829 Legacy Fund, formerly the Providence Journal Charitable Legacy Fund, was established at the Rhode Island Foundation in 2012 with the transfer of assets from the Providence Journal Charitable Foundation which had been awarding grants since 1956.
The Fund supports qualified nonprofit organizations that provide programs and services in the following areas:
- Human services and healthcare, with a focus on the homeless
- Education and youth
- Arts and culture
- Responsible and ethical journalism
Please note that the primary geographic focus for funding is Rhode Island.
Application information
Applicants may apply once per calendar year and can expect to receive a funding decision within approximately three months of applying.
Application deadlines for 2024 are April 2, June 18, September 17, and November 26.
