Working together to provide affordable, accessible health care for all Rhode Islanders

We already are hard at work, having established Healthy Lives as one of our three strategic initiatives. We are making investments of funding, as well as institutional investments aimed at improving health outcomes, providing better care, and lowering costs.

Access to affordable healthcare for all Rhode Islanders has long been a priority of the Rhode Island Foundation. We are pleased and encouraged by Governor Gina Raimondo’s recent executive order that caps annual medical cost increases through 2022 at 3.2 percent.

As one of the signatory parties to the “Compact to Reduce the Growth in Health Care Costs and State Health Spending in Rhode Island,” we are honored to play a leadership role in this effort. The Governor’s executive order directs the state health insurance commissioner’s office and the Executive Office of Health and Human Services to “engage relevant parties, including insurers, providers, and community partners, to develop strategies” to help meet the target, and “ensure that consumers and businesses purchasing health insurance share in the positive impact.”

We already are hard at work, having established Healthy Lives as one of our three strategic initiatives through which we are making investments of funding, as well as institutional investments beyond grantmaking, aimed at improving health outcomes, providing better care, and lowering costs.

One of our “beyond grantmaking” investments is the Long Term Health Planning Committee, an engaged group we have convened to develop strategies to provide equitable, accessible health care for all populations. We look forward to sharing our progress with others who are working toward this critical goal, as it is only by working together that we will achieve the best possible outcomes for all Rhode Islanders.
