Grants available to serve LGBTQ communities
Proposals should support, encourage justice for or improve the lives of LGBTQ Rhode Islanders
Nonprofits that serve the state’s LGBTQ communities have until April 14 to apply for grants of up to $10,000 through the Equity Action Fund at the Rhode Island Foundation.
“The Equity Action Fund grant program is open to nonprofits that traditionally have served Rhode Island’s LGBTQ communities, as well as organizations that are working to initiate or expand services to the LGBTQ communities,” said Adrian Bonéy, Foundation’s grants program officer for Equity Action.
There are two categories: project and capacity-building grants of up to $10,000 and small grants of up to $2,500. The projects and capacity-building grant program supports programs and projects that strengthen the ability of an organization to serve and or advocate for the LGBTQ communities. Requests should align with priorities identified by the communities being served or supported. Applicants can receive one project and capacity-building grant a year.
Last year, the Foundation awarded more than $55,000 in grants ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 to nine organizations, including GLBTQ Legal Advocates and Defenders, RIOT RI, Project Weber/RENEW, Sojourner House, The Haus of Glitter, The Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre, Thundermist Health Center, The Steel Yard and Youth Pride.
The work included music mentorship and summer youth programs, wellness and outreach programs for the transgender community, and supporting ongoing family and civil rights advocacy.
The small grant program supports short-term projects or one-time activities with grants up to $2,500. Although small grant applications can be submitted at any time during the year, applicants are encouraged to also apply by April 14.
